In search for the building blocks of the orchestration framework, we have tested different containerization solutions – Docker, LXC and Singularity – and by comparing Feel++ application execution time on native hardware, KVM virtual machine and then in different containers, measured the performance impact of containerization on CPU and networking. We also measured the performance impact with different synthetic benchmarks like the industry standard sysbench tool.
We also working on a flexible test infrastructure, which will serve as a testbed for the newly developed orchestration framework.
The next step is to examine how well these products can integrate with the existing supercomputing ecosystem, like job managers and authentication solutions. Another upcoming task is to create up-to-date containers from the mathematical frameworks and later from the end-user applications.
